Washington Monthly’s
2007 College Guide Ranks UCSD
Fourth Best U.S. University

In rankings based on how much a school benefits the country, UC San Diego placed fourth among 242 U.S. universities in the Washington Monthly 2007 College Guide.

The third annual Washington Monthly guide based its rankings on variables such as “the number of Ph.D. students that flow into the work force, the amount of research generated by the faculty, and the rate of participation in community service programs.” The editors noted that their guide “asks not what colleges can do for you, but what colleges are doing for the country. Are our colleges making good use of our tax dollars? Are they producing graduates who can keep our nation competitive in a changing world? Are they, in short, doing well by doing good?”
