Humanities scholars and artists at UCSD are reshaping their fields and moving them in new and exciting directions. Many of the departments in the Division of Arts and Humanities rank among the nation’s best.
In summer 2007, the Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers’ Workshop relocated to UCSD. Clarion is the oldest national workshop of its kind and a premier training ground for aspiring fantasy and science fiction writers. In its new San Diego home, Clarion will provide opportunities for student interaction with eminent scientists engaged in cutting-edge work.
Last year, the Department of Theatre and Dance continued to make its presence known. Tony Award-winning costume designer Judith Dolan received critical praise and award nominations for her work on the Broadway musical LoveMusik, her latest collaboration with Harold Prince. Locally, Director Darko Tresjnak served as artistic director of the Old Globe’s Summer Shakespeare Festival.
Jorge Huerta received the Lifetime Achievement in Educational Theatre Award from the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE). Huerta, who also serves as associate chancellor and chief diversity officer at UCSD, is the first Chicano theatre professor and professional to receive this award.
In the Department of Visual Arts, faculty members Raul Guerrero, Jean Lowe, and Ernest Silva received the first annual San Diego Art Prize: Recognition of Excellence in the Visual Arts. Each of the winners had their work exhibited at a joint show with an emerging artist of their own choosing.
Science historian Naomi Oreskes has documented the emerging consensus among scientists that humans contribute to climate change. She recently testified before Congress, was widely cited in the mass media for her scholarly work, and wrote an opinion piece in the Washington Post. Former Vice President Al Gore, who refers to her research in his film and book, An Inconvenient Truth, applauded her in person during his May appearance on campus.
