UC
San Diego leveraged the $299 million that the state of California
contributed to the campus last year into total revenues of $1.5 billion,
or more than five times the original investment. Of that total, $920
million was money that UC San Diego attracted from outside the region,
and this made an overall economic impact of $2.2 billion, or more
than seven times the amount of the original state investment. This
economic activity contributed to the creation of 61,000 jobs locally
and 70,000 jobs nationally, for a total of 131,000 jobs.
In
an economy dominated by telecommunications and health-science research,
UC San Diego has already proved itself. The research conducted at
the university and the entrepreneurial spirit of the highly qualified
students it produces have provided much of the inspiration, the
drive, and the building blocks for the robust and future-oriented
economy that San Diego and the state of California enjoy.
With
success comes experience. So much so that UC San Diego now stands
not only well-attuned to the needs of the regional and national
economies, it is also geared up and ready to lead that economy with
new ideas yet to be bred of innovative and multidisciplinary research.
