Economic Impact
UC San Diego made a national economic impact of $2.2 billion, more than seven times the initial state of California contribution of $299 million. This $2.2 billion created 131,000 jobs.

Rankings
In a National Research Council study of the quality of faculty in graduate programs in universities in the United States, UC San Diego was ranked tenth.

U.S. News & World Report rated UC San Diego seventh in excellence among all state-supported colleges and universities in the United States.

UC San Diego was sixth in the nation and first in the UC system of universities in terms of federal agency awards for research in FY 1998 (the most recent year for which comparative figures are available).

In a listing that placed greater weight on quality rather than cost, UC San Diego was ranked tenth ìBest Buyî among 100 of the top public universities and colleges in the nation by Kiplingerís Personal Finance.

In terms of the presence of foreign scholars on campus, UC San Diego was ranked fifth in the nation by the Chronicle of Higher Education. UC San Diego also sent more students abroad than any other single university in the United States.

In a recent listing of ìcell superstars and genome giants,î UC San Diego was ranked fifth in the world in terms of the most-cited molecular-biology and genetic-research papers published in prestigious journals. UC San Diego Pharmacology Professor Michael Karin was ranked first worldwide.
