UC San Diego raised a total of $77.4 million in private support last year, the second-best year in its history and exceeded only in 1995-96 when an extraordinary gift was given to the Geisel Library.
Of the $77.4 million total, $25.6 million was given by individuals, $24.9 million came from foundations, and $16.1 million came from corporations.
The largest proportion of the donations, $37.5 million, was given for research; $5.0 million was given for fellowships and scholarships.
Philanthropists Sam and Rose Stein donated $3 million to the Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging, to be used for a clinical research building that will bear their name.
Intel Corp. agreed to give the university a $2.4 million gift of computing equipment and other resources to benefit a dozen widely disparate teaching and research programs in the arts and the sciences over a three-year period.
The Sloan Foundation gave the campus a $1.75 million gift to establish a center to study the information-storage industry.
