UC San Diego and Private Giving

The steady rise in the amount of private giving and the spectacular increase in value of the assets of the UC San Diego Foundation since it was founded just 26 years ago are sure signs of the strength of the research, teaching, and public service conducted by the campus.

UC San Diego raised a total of $77.4 million in private support last year, the second-best year in its history and exceeded only in 1995-96 when an extraordinary gift was given to the Geisel Library.

Of the $77.4 million total, $25.6 million was given by individuals, $24.9 million came from foundations, and $16.1 million came from corporations.

The largest proportion of the donations, $37.5 million, was given for research; $5.0 million was given for fellowships and scholarships.

Major Gifts

The largest gift in fiscal 1998 was $15 million in endowment support for the UC San Diego School of Engineering from Irwin M. Jacobs, CEO and chairman of Qualcomm Inc., and his wife, Joan. In recognition of their generosity, the school was named The Irwin and Joan Jacobs School of Engineering and a dedication ceremony was held in May.

Philanthropists Sam and Rose Stein donated $3 million to the Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging, to be used for a clinical research building that will bear their name.

Intel Corp. agreed to give the university a $2.4 million gift of computing equipment and other resources to benefit a dozen widely disparate teaching and research programs in the arts and the sciences over a three-year period.

The Sloan Foundation gave the campus a $1.75 million gift to establish a center to study the information-storage industry.

Foundation Chair William Beamer

William Beamer Born in Whittier, Calif., the current chair of the UC San Diego Foundation Board of Trustees, William Beamer, obtained degrees in political science from Stanford University and law from UC Berkeley’s Boalt Hall before being admitted to the California State Bar in 1970.

For the past twenty years Beamer has been inspired by the cultural and economic impact of UC San Diego on the community, and during that period he has chaired the UC San Diego Development Council and the Chancellor’s Associates. He has also served on the Planned Gift Subcommittee and the executive committee of the highly successful UCSD 25th Anniversary Campaign.

Beamer heads his own law firm in San Diego, and he and his wife, Sharon, a Stanford English major who has served on the UCSD Cancer Center Advisory Board, have three children, William, Jonathan, and Michael.

New Vice Cancellor for External Relations

Jim Langley James M. Langley who, as vice president for external affairs at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, doubled that university’s private giving, more than doubled its foundation assets and launched a $400 million campaign, is the new vice chancellor for external relations at UCSD.

In his new position, Langley oversees UCSD’s fundraising and communications programs, directs the campus’s government-affairs, alumni, and community-relations activities, and serves as president of the UC San Diego Foundation. He has a bachelor’s degree in English literature and a master’s degree in British history, both from the University of Cincinnati.
